The Helsinki Committee: Citizenship to be issued according to European standards

The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights has prepared a legal opinion on non-citizenship, with reference to the Law on Citizenship, the Law on Foreign Nationals and the Law on Unregistered Persons in the Birth Register. According to the Committee the state should find solutions for them in accordance with international standards as well as the legislation and practice of the European Union.

Also it states that at the moment there are legal possibilities for acquiring citizenship of the two affected categories.

“The existing legal regulation should simply be given a chance. and until the expiration of the deadline on 05.06.2021 provided in the Law on Foreigners and until the expiration of the deadline on 30.06.2021 provided in the Law on unregistered persons in the birth register (ZNLMKR).”
