Plastic bag ban goes into effect as of today

A ban on plastic bags is taking effect as of Wednesday, December 1. Only biodegradable bags will be now available to citizens, and will be charged MKD 15. The funds will be collected in a special environmental fund. According to the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, citizens will easily adapt to the change which is of major importance for the environment.

“In the long run, this decision will contribute to resolving a number of environmental issues, as the funds collected will be used to invest in the environment. This would mean investing in innovative, clean technologies, in the waste management system, waste sorting, reducing the pressure on the environment, etc.,” the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning told the media.

As regards feedback expected from the citizens, the Ministry pointed out they expect citizens to easily accept the change.
