Macedonia, as well as Bulgaria, submitted a unilateral statement that will be attached to the minutes of the first intergovernmental conference with the EU, with which the state highlights the uniqueness of the Macedonian language.
It states that the literary Macedonian language was codified in 1945, but also that it is a language that has its own tradition and has developed over the centuries.
It stresses that for the conclusion of any agreements and documents with the EU, the Macedonian language must be clearly stated without any explanations or footnotes, as well as that North Macedonia will not accept to discuss any other solution for the Macedonian language during the accession negotiations.
