The Macedonian Government will improve the country’s air connectivity with a new subsidy scheme for the introduction of new routes from Skopje and Ohrid airports as of next year, EX-YU Aviation News reported.
“Our goal is to launch new destinations that are currently not served from Skopje and Ohrid next year. As a result, we would welcome many more tourists, but we will also enable Macedonians to travel abroad more easily and affordably,” said the Minister of Transport and Communications, Aleksandar Nikoloski.
The Macedonian Government has been conducting tenders for the introduction of new services since 2013 and has held four so far. All were won by Wizz Air, which was the only airline to apply, with the exception of the last one in 2023, which included Lufthansa. Wizz Air has not introduced all the planned new routes based on which it was awarded the previous tender due to ongoing fleet problems.
