Macedonia strengthens strategic ties with U.S. and confirms alignment with EU, says Miloshoski

Member of the Executive Committee of the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party and MP Anotnio Miloshoski discussed the country’s international relations in an interview with the national broadcaster MRT. In the interview, he notes that Macedonia is well-positioned regarding both its strategic partnership with the United States of America and its political and economic ties with the European Union and the countries of the region.

“I believe Macedonia is well-positioned, both in terms of its strategic partnership with the US and regarding our political, economic, and cultural ties with the EU and the countries of the region, which I would certainly include, as the regional context is a truly significant factor that works in our favor,” said Miloshoski.

He adds that Macedonia is capable of pursuing a balanced and strategically aligned foreign policy, one that allows for the simultaneous deepening of the strategic partnership with the U.S. (via the Strategic Partnership Dialogue) and the strengthening of political and economic ties with European partners.

“Regarding the U.S. and Europe, this dilemma arises now because there are somewhat different terminologies or frameworks on either side; however, fundamentally, European economic success and democracy would not have been as advanced, or even possible, without the stability and security support provided by the US over the past 60 years. In essence, it is a single table supported by four legs, two from Europe and two from the U.S., forming an inseparable whole. Therefore, I believe Macedonia can pursue an approach that is compatible with both the development of a strategic partnership, facilitated through strategic partnership dialogues, and the maintenance of political ties with Europe, specifically with countries such as Germany, Austria, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, and the broader region,” said Miloshoski.

The ruling party MP points out that Macedonia demonstrates a high level of alignment with the European Union’s foreign and security policy, a fact confirmed by voting records on resolutions, declarations, and other acts at the United Nations during the 2024–2026 period.

“Macedonia has a truly very good track record, speaking in the context of the EU, and I actually have some statistics regarding voting on specific resolutions, declarations, or acts at the UN. Between 2024 and 2026, Macedonia voted the same way as the U.S., and contrary to the majority of EU member states, on only 6 occasions, specifically when the EU lacked a common position. Conversely, in instances where the EU lacked a consensus, we voted in line with the majority of EU member states, and differently from the U.S., on 148 occasions. This demonstrates that whenever the EU has an established common foreign and security policy, our vote aligns with the EU as a whole,” noted Miloshoski.
