Macedonia is investing EUR 5-6 billion into infrastructure upgrades on Corridors VIII and X alone, Macedonian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski said in an interview with the regional network ERNO.
He notes that the country holds a unique position, as these corridors intersect right here, and that this advantage must be leveraged to ensure it remains a competitive transit route.
“Two Pan-European corridors pass through Macedonia: Corridor VIII (East-West) and Corridor X (North-South). We are the only country in Southeast Europe where these two Pan-European corridors intersect. We are striving to capitalize on this unique geographical position, which is why we are making massive investments, ranging between EUR 5 billion and EUR 6 billion. When compared to our Gross Domestic Product (GDP), these are enormous investments, a scale unmatched by any other country in the region. Consequently, we are leading the way and have received praise from the European Commission, the EIB, the EBRD, and other partners for our infrastructure initiatives,” said Deputy PM Nikoloski.
