Divers remove plastic bottles, tires, textiles from Lake Ohrid

Plastic bottles, car tires, textiles, and various types of solid waste were discovered on the bottom of Lake Ohrid during a cleanup operation carried out by members of the Amphora Diving Center. They noted that such initiatives cannot provide a permanent solution unless measures are taken to prevent waste from being discarded into the lake again.

The divers searched the lakebed along the stretch from the Gradishte campsite to Velidab, retrieving waste that had been left in the lake. The project was funded by the Tourism and Local Economic Development Department of the Municipality of Ohrid.

This initiative, which is becoming a tradition, serves as a renewed warning regarding the need for greater care and protection of Lake Ohrid. Despite the divers’ regular efforts, the situation unfortunately remains unchanged, and waste continues to end up on the lakebed.

Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in Europe and is characterized by an exceptionally rich biodiversity, including numerous endemic species that represent a natural treasure of inestimable value.
