To mark the 35th anniversary of independence, the Macedonian flag was ceremoniously raised over New York on Sunday.
The traditional ceremony took place in New York’s financial district, in front of the famous Charging Bull statue.
Representatives of the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD), the event’s organizer, expressed their gratitude to the dozens of Macedonians who attended despite the inclement weather and storm warnings.
“With this gesture, we want to remind everyone that we are here and that we are not going anywhere. Much like today’s weather, we have endured 35 difficult years during which attempts were made to erase us; yet, they failed, and we remain here. The UMD’s mission is to bring Macedonians together, because we are stronger when united,” said UMD chairman Argie N. Bellio.
