Unknown persons wrote insults in Albanian language and defaced the monument located on the quay in Gostivar. Previously, the Macedonian flag and parts of the Slavic alphabet were drawn on the heart, as an act to commemorate May 24 – the day of literacy. Gostivar residents condemned this heinous act on social media.
“This is not a procedure that reflects the coexistence of guests, because all of us – Macedonians, Albanians, Turks, Roma – have grown up together, have respected each other and cherished our differences. This can only be done by someone who did not grow up with these values ,” said Ema Meshkovska, councilor in the municipal council and one of the initiators of commemorating the day of Pan-Slavic educators St. Cyril and Methodius.
The event has not been reported to the police, and if it is, as stated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Tetovo, appropriate measures will be taken. On a segment of the concrete monument on Monday, high school students with the permission of the local government painted it with motifs of the Macedonian flag and written letters of the Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets.
