Interior Minister Nake Culev said here were no actual reforms in the country’s security system that should be in line with the EU requirements. He pointed out that the way the National Security Agency (NSA) had been set up was wrong and its mediating role in communication interception had not been removed.

Culev called on the competent Public Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the case and to determine possible responsibility for failure to implement the law, as well as the responsibility of the former MoI leadership and the current NSA and OTA leadership.

He also called on the Civil Oversight Council to say whether they are aware of the situation and whether they had taken appropriate action.

Four years after Priebe’s first report, Culev said, the situation as regards the former UBK remains largely unchanged.

“The National Security Agency is still part of the communication interception system in a way contrary to the law, i.e. it still has the possibility to access all phone conversations subject to operational processing by the Ministry of Interior,” Culev said.

He also called on the Civil Oversight Council to say whether they are aware of the situation and whether they had taken appropriate action.
