Opening of EU accession negotiations with North Macedonia should happen and I hope that we will be able to achieve that this year. There is no other alternative. North Macedonia has met all conditions, German Ambassador Anke Holstein said Wednesday.

She added that as a diplomat she is a notorious optimist and voiced confidence that if every effort is made the goals can be achieved.

In the weeks to come, Holstein said, it is very important North Macedonia and Bulgaria to cooperate in those areas and segments where there are no differences of opinion, which will prove that there is good cooperation.

“Again, we still do not have a plan B. What remains is the opening of North Macedonia’s EU accession talks and the continuation of the accession talks remains,” Holstein said after handing over a donation of vehicles and equipment to the border police at a formal ceremony attended by Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski.

Within the tripartite Council presidency with Portugal and Slovenia, the German Ambassador announced that they will continue to work hard to achieve the opening of EU accession negotiations with the country.

She explained that until the last minute of the Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, they tried to reach unanimous decision among all 27 member states of the Union, but “managed to reach an agreement with 26 member states.”
