A fire broke out Sunday on the territory of the Shar Planina National Park, in the Vinograd area, between the villages of Gjurgjevishte and Lomnica. The fire affected about 0.5 hectares of low vegetation and pasture.
“Fortunately, no major material damage was caused. But in conditions of high temperatures and extremely dry vegetation, any small fire can grow into a serious threat to forests, nature and nearby settlements in just a few minutes. Of particular concern is the fact that the fire could have spread to difficult-to-access parts of Shar Planina, where intervention from the ground is extremely difficult, and in certain situations even impossible without air support,” said the Shar Planina National Park representative.
According to initial findings, the cause of the fire is a human factor, and police officers inspected the site.
The burned area is recorded as pasture managed by the Public Enterprise for Pastures, and is located within the borders of the Shar Planina National Park.
The Shar Planina National Park appeals to citizens who notice smoke or fire to report it immediately, while the fire can still be quickly put under control.
