The Macedonian Ministry of Education and Science (MES) issued a sharp response to a press conference held by the Social Democratic Youth of Macedonia (SDMM), during which criticisms were raised regarding conditions at the renovated “Stiv Naumov” student dormitory in the Avtokomanda neighborhood of Skopje. The Ministry asserts that conditions at the dormitory are excellent, noting that while some of the reported issues were technical in nature, others were caused by the irresponsible use of the facility.
The MES states that the renovation of the dormitory, carried out with support from the European Union, began in July 2024 and was recently completed. According to the Ministry, the “Stiv Naumov” dorm is the first of nine student dormitories slated for comprehensive, energy-efficient renovation during the current Government’s term.
The response cites several incidents at the dormitory, including sewage blockages caused by the disposal of wet wipes, the triggering of the alarm system due to food left in an active microwave, and the lighting of cigarettes inside rooms. The MES also points to an instance where a radiator was torn off the wall, as well as the parking of cars on the green spaces within the dormitory grounds. All issues have been resolved, the Ministry asserts, adding that the facility is still under warranty and that the contractor is addressing any technical defects that arise.
The Ministry of Education and Science rejects the claim that conditions at the dormitory are inadequate, inviting representatives of the SDMM (Social Democratic Youth of Macedonia) to visit the facility and see the situation for themselves.
“Conditions at the “Stiv Naumov” dorm are excellent, and the food meets prescribed nutritional standards—this can be verified at any time,” the Ministry said in a press release.
In its response, the Ministry also directs political criticism toward SDSM, accusing the party of failing during its seven years in power to keep promises to improve student living standards, including the previously announced construction of a “student city”.
“Over the course of their mandates, four ministers failed to lay a single brick,” reads the press release
The Ministry views these criticisms as an attempt to discredit its work and incite dissatisfaction among students, labeling SDSM’s behavior as hypocrisy.
