The shortage of anesthesiologists and radiologists is one of the biggest challenges in Macedonian healthcare and cannot be overcome in a short period of time, because these are specializations that last six years, Macedonian Health Minister SashoKlekovskitold Kanal 5 TV in an interview Wednesday evening.
“I must say that the experiment with private specializations conducted in 2018-2017 did not yield the desired results, that is, private specializations that are needed in our country were not enrolled, but what the doctors wanted. So, now we have many cardiologists again, a lot of plastic surgery, and little pathology, little anesthesiology, little radiology,” Klekovski noted.
The minister stressed that the Government will continue with investments in the healthcare system, with the top priority remaining the completion of the ShtipClinical Hospital, as well as other hospitals covered by the project, in parallel with improving the conditions in the Clinical Center in Skopje and other public healthcare institutions.
“We continue to increase the number of healthcare workers. So, a few years ago, before Corona, there were 20,000 healthcare workers in public healthcare, we welcomed 2024 with 18,000, and in 2025 we increased it to 18,900. Now we are hiring 300 new young specialists. I hope that the process of hiring contract workers will finally be completed,”Minister Klekovski added.
