New mining technologies enable exploitation with very low emissions and a significantly higher level of environmental protection than in the past, says geologist GjorgjiDimov.
He points out that modern practices are already being applied in the new Skouries mine in Greece, which is located in the same metallogenic belt as the Ilovica deposit. According to him, this shows that technologies that function successfully in the neighborhood can also be applied in Macedonia.
Dimov adds that the similar geological characteristics of the two areas represent a significant opportunity for the development of domestic mining.
“These are technologies that are successfully applied everywhere in the world. Everything that is currently being done in European countries should be fully replicated here,” Professor Dimovsaid in an interview withKanal 5 TV.
Some residents in the region have already given their support to the copper mine project in Ilovica, seeing it as a solution to the dramatic population decline and mass emigration of young people. The local initiative “Both Health and Work” recently stated that “it is worrying that in public, those who, without proper expertise, present themselves as experts in everything – from mining and geology, through economics, to law and international court proceedings” are increasingly the most vocal.
