The Macedonian Parliament adopted the Law on Amendments to the Law on the Removal and Transplantation of Parts of the Human Body for the Purpose of Treatment.
With the legal amendments, every adult citizen will be able to clearly state to their family doctor whether they want to be an organ donor, which will allow for a clearer picture of citizens’ attitudes and will further strengthen trust and awareness about organ donation. The amendments also envisage increasing treatment opportunities by expanding the circle of living donors up to the fourth degree of kinship, while fully respecting all ethical, medical and legal standards.
Macedonian Health MinisterAzirAliu said at a public panel discussion that the declaration will be made via new digital module in ‘My Appointment’, securely and with double verification.
“Each citizen will be able to change or withdraw their decision at any time. This is important from two aspects. First, we will respect the personal freedom and will of every person. Second, finally as a country we will know how many citizens want to be organ donors. We will know where there is greater awareness, and where there is fear, distrust or insufficient knowledge about organ donation. When the system starts to be implemented, I will be the first to register as an organ donor,” said Minister Aliu.
