On 8 September 1991, the citizens of Macedonia reaffirmed their aspiration for a sovereign and independent state through a historic referendum, a milestone that marked the beginning of the process of establishing national institutions, diplomatic offices, a security system, and economic policies.
“Are you in favor of an independent Macedonia with the right to join a future union of sovereign states of Yugoslavia?” was the referendum question, to which 95 percent of the citizens who voted in favor.
According to official data, out of 1,495,626 voters, 1,132,981 citizens with the right to vote or 71.85 percent turned out to vote, and out of the total number of citizens who voted in the Referendum, 1,079,308 citizens, or 95.09 percent (or 72.16% of the total number of citizens with the right to vote), voted positively. The results speak for themselves about the success of the referendum.
