SDSM pledges to check assets of all officials since the ‘90s

We are introducing vetting for all elected and appointed officials from the 1990s to the present. Every official will have to explain where their assets come from and how they acquired them, said SDSM Executive Board member Aleksandar Naumoski at a party press conference Friday, explaining the party’s intentions for dealing with corruption and crime if they were in power.

Today corruption is pervasive everywhere in society and in the authorities, said Naumoski.

“It is true that today corruption is in every pore of society, and justice is selective and captured by the corrupt government. It is true that instead of an independent judiciary, there is party control and public dictation of how prosecutors should act from the parliamentary rostrum, television or by phone. The truth is that citizens do not trust the judicial system because there is no system.

That is why the fight against corruption is at the heart of our program “your country – your chance’,” said the SDSM Executive Board member.

He said that the first steps of the party after taking power would be to pass a new anti-corruption law, then establish a special independent body to fight corruption and digital mechanisms for monitoring public funds.

Then, noted Naumoski, SDSM will begin with the “abolition of immunities” of officials and an urgent inspection of the property of all officials from the 1990s to date and the seizure of illegally acquired property – tangible or intangible. Judges and prosecutors will also be vetted.

“A special measure – urgent confiscation of illegally acquired wealth. It is fair for citizens to know how officials came to have their property. We are abolishing the immunities of officials, no one will be above the law.

We are introducing vetting for judges and prosecutors – Justice must begin with those who enforce it,” added Naumoski.
