Seven new West Nile virus cases have been reported in the country this week, all in Skopje. Two cases were recorded in Kisela Voda and Gazi Baba each, and one each in Ilinden, Butel and Aerodrom. The patients, aged 60 to 84, have all been hospitalized, the Macedonian Ministry of Health said Friday.
A total of 16 patients are currently hospitalized at the University Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Febrile Conditions. In 15 of them, the infection has been laboratory confirmed, while the results are awaited for one suspected case. Three patients are in critical condition and are intubated. These are elderly people with concomitant diseases. The remaining patients are in stable condition and are receiving appropriate treatment.
So far, a total of 20 cases of West Nile virus infection have been registered in the country. The first case was reported on May 15, 2026 in Veles.
The most effective prevention is protection from mosquito bites. It is recommended to avoid staying outdoors at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active, as well as to use repellents and protective nets on doors and windows.
