The Macedonian Supreme Court rejected as unfounded the initiative for an extraordinary review of the final verdict for Vasil Jovanov, thus the sentence of 13 years in prison remains final and without the possibility of further mitigation.

The Court informs that the decision was made at a session of the council held on March 11 2026, after reviewing the case KVP2-22/26, upon a request submitted by the convicted person through his defense attorney.

This decision confirms the verdicts of the Basic Criminal Court Skopje from May 2025 and the Skopje Appellate Court from October of the same year, by which Jovanov was declared guilty of the crime of serious crimes against the safety of people and property in traffic and sentenced to 13 years in prison.

The initial sentence pronounced by the Criminal Court was 12 years, but the Appellate Court increased it to 13 years.

The case concerns a traffic accident that occurred last year in Skopje, when Jovanov, driving a vehicle without a driver’s license, under the influence of alcohol and running a red light, hit Frosina Kulakova at a pedestrian crossing. The victim was crossing at a green light and died on the spot.

The Criminal Code provides for a prison sentence of four to 20 years for the crime for which the suspect was convicted. With the rejection of the extraordinary review, the verdict becomes final.
