SharPlanina National Park informs that two new Balkan lynx have been registered in the protected area through their video surveillance. With these two lynxes, a total of five such wild animals that fall into the category of rare and endangered species have now been recorded.
“The two individuals are in good health, which is an indicator of stabilization and recovery of the population of this rare species on SharPlanina,” SharPlanina National Park said in a press release.
At the beginning of 2026, SharPlanina National Park announced that this year the existence of the rare and endangered species of wild animal – the Balkan lynx – will have intensified monitoring, as a result of deepening cooperation with the Macedonian Ecological Society (MED).
In the mountains, especially in the western part of the country, it is estimated that there are about 40 specimens. The presence of the lynx has been recorded for the past 20 years with video cameras placed in dozens of places in the national parks of SharPlanina, Mavrovo, Pelister, as well as on IlinskaPlanina, Jablanica, Galichica and the Jasen protected area.
