A 72-year-old man from Skopje is the second person to die from the West Nile fever infection in the country, said Clinic for Infectious Diseases director Fadil Cana in a press briefing.

Cana said in a statement that the patient’s condition was severe at the time of admission and it got worse despite the intensive treatment.

“The clinic is currently treating 24 patients, of whom the West Nile virus is confirmed in 19, while five are currently being diagnosed. Seven patients are in a more severe condition, of whom five are on respiratory support. The remaining patients are in stable condition,” said Cana.

An 83-year-old man was the first West Nile virus-related death a couple of days ago. Both fatalities had underlying diseases.
