West Nile fever virus claims its fifth victim – 73-year-old patient from Skopje’s Dolno Lisiche

A total of 19 patients have achieved full recovery and discharge

The country has recorded yet another death due to West Nile virus infection, Infectious Diseases Clinic’s director Fadil Cana said Saturday.

According to Cana, the patient, aged 73, presented with a critical clinical picture and multiple serious underlying health conditions that contributed to the fatal outcome.

“The patient remained hospitalized for 22 days, presenting with a critical condition upon admission that persisted throughout. He was placed in the Intensive Care Unit and placed on respiratory support,” said Cana.

The patient was from Skopje’s Aerodrom Municipality (Novo Lisiche). This brings the total number of West Nile virus deaths in the country to five.

The Clinic for Infectious Diseases director noted that of the 21 patients currently hospitalized, 18 present with confirmed neuroinvasive infection, while three are treated as suspected cases. A total of 19 patients have achieved full recovery and discharge.
