A patient in critical condition after being diagnosed with the neuroinvasive disease of the West Nile virus has died in a Skopje hospital, bringing the death toll to four.

Twenty patients with West Nile fever have been hospitalized, of which 18 are laboratory-confirmed cases, while two cases are clinically suspected. Five patients with a more severe clinical picture are in intensive care and are being treated according to all clinical protocols, said the Clinic’s director Fadil Cana on Tuesday.

The doctor pointed out that the deceased was 76 years old and had been treated for 27 days at the Clinic, but due to additional serious concomitant diseases and the severe neuroinvasive form of the brain and meninges, a fatal outcome occurred in the late afternoon.

A total of four people have died from West Nile fever in the country, and 15 have been cured and discharged from the Skopje Infectious Diseases Clinic.
