10.7% use public transport every day in EU, 9.6% in Macedonia

The data show large differences, indicating that while in some Skopje municipalities around 19% of citizens most often use the city bus, in the cities and towns across the country people mostly use organized transport

Up to 10.7% of people used public transport every day in 2024 as a key part of sustainable urban transport in the European Union. In Macedonia, around 7% of people use a city bus every day, 2.6% use a coach bus and 0.06% use a train (total 9.6%). The data show large differences, indicating that while in some Skopje municipalities around 19% of citizens most often use the city bus, in the cities and towns across the country people mostly use organized transport.

Around 10.7% of people aged 16 or older in the European Union use some type of public transport every day, while over half of people – 51% do not use public transport. In Macedonia, over a third of citizens most often use a car, while around 10 percent of people aged 15 and over most often use public transport, and additionally over eight percent use organized transport.

The highest number of people using public transport daily is in Hungary (19.6%), Switzerland (19.2%) and Luxembourg (19%). The lowest number is in Cyprus (4.5%), Italy (5.1%) and Slovenia (6.2%).

Of the countries in the region, 16.8% of people in Albania use public transport daily, 15.3% in Bulgaria, 14.8% in Serbia and 6.7% in Greece.
