I spoke with to leaders of SDSM Zoran Zaev and VMRO-DPMNE Hristijan Mickoski
to stress the importance of free, fair and inclusive elections in Macedonia, taking into
account the situation with COVID-19, as well as the need to address it effectively
address economic recovery, European Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver
Varhelyi wrote on Twitter.
The message from the EU Enlargement Commissioner is clear, given the fact that
the situation with the coronavirus must be taken into account, which means that a
fixed date cannot be set for them, but the date must be adjusted according to the
circumstances.
This means that Macedonia needs to see the real situation, and that is a drastically
increased number of infected and victims, so the elections in our case cannot be a
priority.
Varhelyi emphasizes the importance of making the elections inclusive, ie not
elections without the participation of the opposition.
The EU Commissioner for Enlargement recently said he would contact Macedonian
authorities for assurances that there would be enough time for the election campaign
and that the elections would be fair.
