The population in Macedonia is getting older

According to the population estimate, at the end of last 2019 in the country there were 2,076,255 inhabitants, which is 7,083 people more than in 2014 and 23,533 people more than in 2009.

In the period from 2009 to 2019, there is a continuous increase in immigrant foreigners. The data of the State Statistical Office show that in the same period the number of live births decreased, and the number of deaths increased.
According to the population estimate, there are 2,076,255 inhabitants in Macedonia, which is 7,083 people or 0.3 percent more compared to 2014 and 23,533 people or 1.1 percent more than in 2009.

In the period from 2009 to 2019, there is a continuous increase of immigrants in the Republic of Macedonia.

In terms of age structure, the Macedonian population is getting older. In the period from 2009 to 2019, the share of the young population (0-14 years) in the total decreased from 17.7 to 16.2 percent, and the share of the old population (65 years and older) increased from 11.6 percent at 14.5 percent.

In the period from 2009 to 2019, the SSO notes that the number of live births decreased by 3,839 or 16.2 percent. Changes in the age structure of the population have their reflection on the number of deaths in the country. The number of deaths contributed to the increase in the mortality rate, which in 2019 was 9.8 ‰ (deaths per 1000 population).
