The regionally known infectious diseases expert and Professor at the Skopje Medical Faculty Dr. Velo Markovski criticized the use of the strong antibiotic Sumamed on COVID-19 patients in his posts on social media concerning the coronavirus pandemic.

“With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sumamed (azithromycin) became the most popular antibiotic, initially considered the only salvation. In many countries all positive (with PCR) were given this antibiotic, fortunately most health systems have given up this illogical, unnecessary and harmful therapy. At the same time, the basic principles of evidence-based medicine in the use of an antibiotic were forgotten,” said Dr. Markovski, who has recently become politically active in the opposition VMRO-DPMNE.

Explaining that COVID-19 is a viral disease, antibiotics (which are intended exclusively for the treatment of bacterial infections) have no effect on viruses.
