Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev has asked that a separate chapter on criteria for good-neighbourly relations be included in Macedonia’s EU negotiating framework.

According to him, Bulgaria must before all else protect its history, language and identity.

“No one can do this for us. I’m convinced that we’ll reach the right solution through cooperation. However, as the Friendship Treaty has not shown results, we have the right to seek other instruments. Macedonia is the one seeking EU membership, not Bulgaria. It must decide whether it will continue to promote hate ideology or launch democratic development,” Radev said in an interview with Bulgarian public broadcaster BNT

The President stressed that he has convinced Boyko Borissov’s government that Bulgaria can’t offer unconditional support for Macedonia.
