President Stevo Pendarovski is in consultation with legal experts before signing the census law, his office told adding that the President’s stance will be announced in the coming days.
“President Pendarovski is engaging in consultation with legal experts on the census law and will announce his stance in the next few days,” said the President’s office.
The opposition VMRO-DPMNE is calling on the President not to sign the law.
VMRO-DPMNE MP Timcho Mucunski reiterated the party’s position that the census was extremely politicized and once again called on President Stevo Pendarovski to consult experts before deciding whether to sign the decree. According to Mucunski, the census was conducted according to an outdated methodology, which they believe is not in line with the UN and EU standards, i.e. the standards of Eurostat. “We put forward concrete proposals on how Macedonia can conduct an electronic census because there’s capacity for that. But obviously no one took notice,” Mucunski said.
