One-quarter fewer marriages in Macedonia in 2020

A total of 10,278 marriages and 1,569 divorces were registered in 2020, a decrease of 25.6% and 21.2% respectively compared to 2019, according to the latest figures released by the State Statistical Office.

Most marriages were entered into in August (13.8%), and the fewest in April (1.6%). There were fewest divorces in May, 29 or 1.8%, and most in July, 199 or 12.7%.

By marriage order, most marriages entered into were first marriages, for 94.1% of the women and 92.8% of the men. Men entered more often into a second marriage, 6.5%, and third marriage, making up 0.6% of the total number of marriages.

In 2020, the highest number of marriages, 3,380 or 32.9% by age of bride were registered in the 20-24 age group, whereas 3,780 or 36.8% by age of groom were registered in the 25-29 age group.

The average age at first marriage is 27.0 years for bride and 29.7 for groom.

The highest number of divorces by age of women, 278 or 17.7%, and by age of men, 262 or 27.7%, was recorded in the same age group, 35-39.

According to the duration of marriage, most divorces, 324 or 20.7%, took place 5 to 9 years after marriage.
