At the University Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Clinical Center in Skopje, a right forearm transplant was successfully performed by a team of surgeons and anesthesiologists, who was in constant communication with Prof. Dr. Oskar Azman, plastic surgeon from the Medical University of Vienna and visiting professor at the Medical Faculty in Skopje.
Upper limb transplantation is considered to be one of the most complex surgical interventions that includesosteosynthesis of bones, revascularization-anastomosis of arteries and veins, reconstruction of nerves and musculoskeletal apparatus and reconstruction of soft tissue lining.
The patient was self-injured with a chainsaw, and admitted to the Plastic Surgery Clinic in hemorrhagic shock a few hours after the injury.
Immediately after the admission, the team was organized and the surgery was performed because this type of surgery has a small time window for intervention (up to 6 hours since injury).
