Discussion on the status of the Ohrid region is expected to be on the agenda of the 44th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which is taking place in Chinese city of Fuzhou on Friday.

The Committee will discuss the future status of the natural and cultural heritage of the Ohrid region, with the draft-report noting the shortcomings by the state, institutions, national and local authorities regarding Lake Ohrid and the town of Ohrid, which is part of the World Heritage List, and the inappropriate response by the state and institutions on the remarks noted by UNESCO, resulting in a proposal that the region is inscribed in the List of World Heritage in Danger.

It is highly likely that the Ohrid region will be moved to the List of World Heritage in Danger, with some experts saying maybe this is the way for the state, institutions and the town to get the proper support and tools from UNESCO toward overcoming the problems that have led to the current situation.

Earlier, over 34 organizations in Macedonia and Albania sent a letter to the World Heritage Committee requesting UNESCO to include the Ohrid region in the List of World Heritage in Danger.
