The C-27 Spartan aircraft of the Romanian Air Force, which is specialized in firefighting and has a fire retardant capacity of six tons of water, has arrived in North Macedonia and can immediately begin firefighting operations. The aircraft will be engaged in the Berovo region, the Ministry of Defense said in a press release.

Another Romanian plane is expected to arrive soon to bring containers and additional equipment in support of the firefighting efforts, adds the press release.

The support from Macedonia’s NATO ally, Romania, comes following a written request for urgent assistance to firefighting efforts sent by Defence Minister Radmila Shekerinska to her Romanian counterpart Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă.

“Please, review the conditions for sending a plane to put out wildfires, which is urgently needed for the Republic of North Macedonia. Solidarity from allies is key in difficult times. We are grateful for all your help and support,” read Shekerinska’s letter to Ciucă.
