Public debt has reached 60 percent GDP, says State Audit Office

The State Audit Office published the audit report on the performed performance audit – Public Debt Management – Debt of the Republic of North Macedonia.

The audit was performed in accordance with the annual Work Program of the State Audit Office for 2020 and covers the period 2015 – 2020, although certain areas, issues and events are covered before 2015.

“In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the limit of public debt of 60 percent of GDP was reached and the debt was increased by 15 percentage points. In the Republic of North Macedonia and other countries internationally in response to the health and economic crisis, compliance with fiscal rules for public debt and deficit management is not always ensured and there is an increase in the level of public debt,” said the SAO.
