Bulgarian President Rumen Radev at Tuesday’s meeting with representatives of Bulgarian organizations and associations from Macedonia asked for clear and categorical guarantees from the authorities in Skopje for respecting the rights of Bulgarians in the RSM, reports Bulgarian media.

The President demanded the inclusion of Bulgarians in the Constitution of the RNM before the start of the country’s accession negotiations with the EU, as well as respect for the Bulgarian cultural and historical heritage.

“We highly respect your opinion on how Macedonia can reach EU membership faster. Important changes have taken place since our last meeting – our countries have new governments. In addition to all steps for cooperation in the field of economy, tourism, etc. there should be a clear timetable for addressing open political issues. Bulgaria is the country that most wants your quick accession to the European Union family. I believe that the inclusion of the Macedonian Bulgarians in the Constitution of the RNM should be a mandatory condition for Bulgaria to give consent for the start of negotiations. I believe that you are equal citizens of RNM, and not to be invisible, as you are now. Hate speech should be eradicated. This is not Bulgaria’s interference in Macedonia’s internal affairs. It is an expression of concern for RNM and its path to EU accession,” Radev said.
