Pendarovski: Prolonging European integration shakes the credibility of the EU

I sincerely hope that next week in Brussels, the leaders of the European Union will finally keep their promise made in March 2020, when the General Affairs Council unanimously decided to start accession negotiations with Macedonia as soon as possible, said Macedonian President Stevo Pendarovski at a joint press conference with the President of the European Council Charles Michel in Ohrid.
The head of state believes that Michel’s visit ‘in this turbulent period for Europe and the world, just a few days before the June EU summit, indicates the need for coordination of steps between the Balkans and the Union in view of the need for decisive and principled decisions’.
“Today we talked about the fact that the prolongation of North Macedonia’s European integration shakes the credibility of the EU, which at the same time means a decrease in its influence among our citizens. Bonding by a member state on a candidate country for bilateral reasons not only flagrantly violates the promise of a European future for the Western Balkans, but can also completely compromise enlargement policy and set a dangerous precedent that will put an end of this process, which, by the way, was considered for years the best foreign policy of the Union”, said Pendarovski.
