This is a sobering moment for North Macedonia, but also for the opposition. Burning documents in the plenary hall, pushing people to violence and inciting hatred bring nothing, only harm, assesses European Commissioner for Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi in an interview with Euractiv.
“For North Macedonia, this should be a wakeup call, but also for the opposition. Burning documents in the plenary hall, pushing people to violence and inciting hatred bring nothing, only harm. There are very clear boundaries for the European way of conducting politics, very clear boundaries for civilized politics, and my assessment is that many of those red lines were crossed by the opposition,” added the European Commissioner.
At the same time, Várhelyi indicated that “Albania has shown real solidarity with North Macedonia and maturity in understanding that member states want both countries to move forward,” but added that Tirana can now continue on its own.
