Macedonian Prime Minister and SDSM leader Dimitar Kovachevski, at today’s leaders’ meeting with the leader of opposition VMRO-DPMNE, Hristijan Mickoski, proposed that the two parties jointly support the constitutional changes, and immediately after that snap parliamentary elections should be scheduled, with VMRO-DPMNE immediately joining the Government. This would allow the country to start accession negotiations with the European Union.
Mickoski requested that the constitutional amendments be adopted with a transitional clause according to which they enter into force only when the ratification of the accession Protocol for Macedonia’s membership in the EU begins in the parliaments of the member countries, which Prime Minister Dimitrievski refused, on the grounds that this would be a violation of the negotiating framework, which Macedonia accepted.
