Scholz: North Macedonia must make the necessary decisions for joining EU

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes that it is the moment for the countries of the Western Balkans to join the EU and encouraged the country to make the necessary decisions on the way to the EU.

“Now is the time for the countries of the Western Balkans to be part of the European Union. We, as the EU, undertook this commitment in Thessaloniki 20 years ago,” Scholz said at a joint conference with Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov in Berlin.

When asked whether North Macedonia was discussed at the meeting with Denkov and whether there was an additional commitment from Sofia on this topic, Scholz did not reply directly, but recalled the promise from Thessaloniki and called on Skopje to make the necessary decisions.
