Elementary and high school pupils are on winter break and will return to school on January 22 for the second semester of 2023/2024. The school year will end for the first time on June 17, because by the decision of the Government a spring break is also introduced, from April 29 to May 5, 2024.
In the 2023 calendar year, the application of the Concept for Basic Education, which began in 2020, continued, and the problem with the delay of new textbooks – this year for the third and sixth grades – was repeated. The Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Education and Science have been dealing with the threats of allegedly planted bombs in schools for weeks, Macedonian pupils showed below-average results on the new international PISA-testing.
Third graders received their textbooks in the first half of September, and sixth graders waited until November. In 2023/2024, both of them study new curricula in accordance with the Concept for Basic Education, which is being implemented in phases for three years.
