According to the Prespa Agreement, N. Macedonia has an obligation to change paper and coin money, but the deadline depends on the opening of the EU chapter – economic and monetary union.
As the vice-governor Emilija Nacevska explains, Macedonia has not yet opened that chapter, so at the moment it is not possible to specify the deadline for the complete replacement of the currency.
“A legal obligation according to the Prespa Agreement is also to replace the money, with the deadline being before the expiration of 5 years from the opening of the relevant chapter with the EU on this issue within the negotiation process, given that this chapter has not yet been is open and the deadline is not known, we cannot now specify the deadline for the full replacement of the money,” Nacevska told Kanal 5 TV.
“The change of money will be done gradually because it is a long and expensive process, which requires timely inventory planning,” added Nacevska.
