The electoral roll closes on March 18, and if the legal amendments that will allow voting with personal documents with the old name of the state do not come into force, the right to vote will be violated for 100,000 citizens, said Caretaker Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski on Thursday.

In a response to a reporter’s question, Toshkovski says that the statement of Caretaker Prime Minister Talat Xhaferi that the amendments to the Electoral Code are not necessary because there is time to extract the personal documents is frivolous.

“It is frivolous, especially considering that it is about the need to determine, according to the law, the possibility for Macedonian citizens to exercise their right to vote with travel documents with the old name until the day of the elections. We do not have what the prime minister said for fifty days because the electoral roll closes on March 18, and until that day, if no amendment to the legal solution comes into force, the second human right of these citizens will be violated. The first human right that has been violated for these citizens is the right to freedom of movement. The second human right will be the right to vote,” said Toshkovski, after participating in the Regional Conference on Gender and Security organized by the OSCE Mission in Skopje.
