The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary Peter Szijjártó stated that the European Union needs the energy and freshness of the Western Balkans in this difficult situation. Serbia is key, all chapters have been opened with the Montenegrins, North Macedonia has been a candidate for 18 years, we have not opened accession negotiations with Albania for nine years, said Szijjártó.

After a meeting of the General Affairs Council of the European Union in Brussels, Szijjártó said that Europe will not be complete until it integrates the Western Balkans.

“This is important for economic development, security and human contacts,” said Szijjártó.

As the Hungarian FM said, the European Union in this difficult situation needs the energy and freshness of the Western Balkans.

According to Szijjártó, trust in the European Union is declining in the countries of the Western Balkans.

“Instead of some fellow ministers crying that some other global political players would like to integrate the Western Balkans, we should have already accepted four countries into the European Union. Serbia is key, all chapters have been opened with the Montenegrins, North Macedonia was a candidate for 18 years, and for nine years we did not open the accession negotiations with Albania,” said Szijjártó.

We can only thank the countries that are against the enlargement, said Szijjártó,that the support of the citizens of the Western Balkans towards European integration is declining.
