Macedonian citizens are increasingly deciding to obtain a Serbian passport. The closeness between the two countries and peoples has made the passport of Macedonia’s northern neighbor more attractive. Although according to the countries where one can travel, the Macedonian passport and the Serbian are more or less the same, there are still several advantages.
A large part of those who decide to obtain a Serbian passport use it for their children’s education at universities in Serbia, for business, for sports, or some took it because they got married to Serbian nationals.
There is no official data on how many Macedonian citizens have obtained a Serbian passport, but according to the latest census, about ten thousand Macedonian citizens have dual citizenship – Macedonian and Serbian.
Sasha Bogdanovikj, a member of the Serbian community in Macedonia, says that there are several reasons why there is a growing interest among Macedonian nationals in obtaining a Serbian passport.
There is interest from both sides for economic reasons. Some apply to work, some for sports, culture. There are also some that came from Serbia for work or got married.
