One of the attorneys in the trial in the Kochani nightclub fire trial,PetreShilegov, believes that part of the responsibility for the tragedy also lies with local prosecutors.
In his statement, the former mayor of Skopje pointed out that this is a small environment where, as he said, “where everyone knows everything that goes on”, and that the responsibility of the prosecution cannot be excluded.
“Kochani is not New York, it is not Istanbul, it is not Tokyo. We are talking about a city with about 40 thousand residents, where each talk can be heard. And everyone in this country is to blame, except for the local prosecutors. I think that the Kochani prosecutors are at least a little more to blame, regardless of whether it is the current one or someone before him,” Shilegov said.
The lawyer emphasizes that his views are not directed at individuals personally, but at the need to build a functional system.
“I have nothing personally against anyone, but if we’re going to build a system, let’s build it properly,” Shilegov added.
The trial into the Pulse nightclub fire, in which 63 people lost their lives and nearly 200 were injured, mostly young people, resumes with the presentation of evidence and the questioning of witnesses.
