Macedonian Prime Minister HristijanMickoski assessed that the reactions of some of the Greek media after the use of the term “Macedonia” in the speech of the United States First Lady Melania Trump were expected and not a surprise.

Responding to a reporter’s question, Mickoski stressed that such reactions have existed and will exist, emphasizing that the state should act with dignity and self-confidence when it comes to national identity.

Moreover, the PM rejected as incorrect the accusations in some of the Greek media that a diplomat had access to Trump’s speech before his address.

“Can anyone believe that the speech of the US First Lady, before she delivers it in public, goes to a review by a diplomatic representative. I don’t believe it. Because that would pose a security risk for the US,” said Mickoski.

PM Mickoski said that unnecessary constructions should not be created around the event, emphasizing that Macedonia should pursue a rational and principled foreign policy.

The statement comes after part of the media in Greece reacted violently and with disappointment to the use of the word “Macedonia” by the U.S. First Lady, which reopened sensitive issues related to the name and interstate relations.
