Macedonian Minister of Health Azir Aliu revealed Saturday at a press conference that a doctor employed in public health earned MKD 700,000 thousand (almost EUR 11,350) in one month, but did not share details about who it was and which healthcare institution.

“Both the Ministry of Health and the Government know the institutions, let us resolve this institutionally. I should not give the details at a press conference because I would endanger a system that should not be endangered,” said the minister.

Aliu does not rule out the possibility of criminal liability for this practice. He announced that the ministry will introduce workplace recording systems with fingerprints for healthcare workers and said that they are already testing such a system in two clinics.

“The system will first be introduced in clinics in Skopje, and then in other clinics in the country so that we can monitor them legally. We have situations where doctors examine one patient a week, and others 100 patients a week. Both are wrong. We must monitor them and create a system that, firstly, we the Ministry will realistically monitor and, secondly, we will react in a timely manner,” the health minister added.
