Macedonia’s Public Health Institute (PHI) said that the first case of the Zika virus has been registered in the country, adding that the risk for the population is low.
The patient stayed in the Maldives between May 20 and May 28 and said he was bit by a mosquito. Upon returning to the country, he reported for a checkup at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases.
The first signs of the disease occurred on May 24, including fever, muscle and joint pain, temperature, followed by a rash a few days later. He was tested for Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya viruses, with the lab results confirming the Zika infection.
The patient was not hospitalized and was sent for home treatment and is currently in good condition. The PHI notes that the risk for the population in North Macedonia is currently assessed as low. It can be significantly reduced by implementing the recommended preventive measures for protection from mosquito bites and adherence to recommended preventive measures and advice.
