This year’s archaeological excavations have begun at Samuil’s Fortress, the main goal of which is to further explore the archaeological site, but also to create conditions for further revitalization and development of the entire area.

The archaeological activities are being carried out as part of a project funded by the Macedonian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which continues the research of one of the most important cultural and historical sites in Ohrid and Macedonia.

The project manager is archaeologist, senior curator Anatoli Arnaudoski, who, together with the expert team, will work on discovering, documenting and studying the archaeological remains within the fortress.

Samuil’s Fortress is one of the most recognizable symbols of Ohrid and a significant part of its rich historical and cultural heritage. The new excavations are expected to provide additional knowledge about the development and function of the area throughout different historical periods.
